The Greatest Benefit

The Greatest Benefit

Marriage is the Key to Happy Family Life

One of the greatest benefits that people have in their lives is the benefit of marriage. Even though for the last few decades, people have changed their opinion on this, research has shown the opposite. The modern industry is flooded with products that diminish the sacred role of marriage. Most modern books, movies, songs, media, and other influential powers are spreading content that preaches against marriage. For example, “Marriage is sexless, boring, and oppressive,” declares the headline of a blogger who goes on to declare that marriage is failing people as an institution (Marcotte, 2009, p. 1). Thus, we see more and more young adults delaying their marriage or staying single.

Brad Wilcox, an Associate Professor of Sociology, introduces some significant benefits of marriage for men:

Looking at some great benefits of marriage, we can encourage young adults to choose the marriage path over cohabitation. Research shows the following results about married couples:

  • healthier & recover sooner from surgeries
  •  greater financial security (housing, health care services)
  • generally happier & more satisfied with their life
  • lower depression and panic risk (male) & lower substance abuse risk (female)
  • have a lower mental disorder risk
  • wiser choices (distinguishing needs from wants)

What benefits have you seen in your marriage?
